Most people are familiar with the well-known symbol of victory and glory, the Laurel Wreath, but how many know the story behind this association?.

On the following pages you can trace its origins in Greek Mythology, follow its history and evolution during the times of Greek and Roman Empires, and, finally its place in the modern day.

Was it always made using Laurel to construct the wreath? In fact, No, whilst the name remained throughout the centuries, the traditions changed from place to place and from time to time. The ancient Greek replaced the laurel with olive leaves, and in the dark medieval days, balissic replaced laurel and olive to make the wreath.

While today the image of the Laurel Wreath appears on everything from coins and medals to flags and badges, it has also become a well-spread aromatic spice in almost every kitchen, as well as a common decorative plant in many gardens. Let us take a journey back in time and see where and how has this tradition has started.
