A Melbourne family who claim they were slugged an extra $55 "carbon tax charge" when burying a relative were told "even the dead don't escape the carbon tax".

Erica Maliki and her family were burying her father-in-law at Springvale Cemetery when she was told the price per burial plot had increased because of the carbon tax.

Her father-in-law died on June 30, the day before the carbon tax was introduced, and was buried early last week.

"I thought to myself, 'What carbon could possibly be used by putting a man in a grave?'" Ms Maliki said.

"All they did was put the dirt back in. How can they charge us a carbon tax for burying someone?"

Ms Maliki's son Zaid said the cemetery's receptionist told his sister-in-law "even the dead don't escape the carbon tax".

"We are pretty upset… that comment was a kick in the guts," he said.

The cemetery's communications manager Rebecca Atkins said if the comment about the carbon tax was made, it was in error.

"The carbon tax doesn't impact on our prices whatsoever," Ms Atkins told AAP.

"If that comment was made to them, then unfortunately it would have been in error."

Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust chief executive John Tribe said he was sorry for the distress caused to the Maliki family.

"However, I can categorically state that in no circumstances have our fees increased due to the carbon tax," he said in a statement.

Mr Tribe said he would ensure all employees were fully aware of this to prevent clients being misinformed.

He said the cemetery increased its fees on July 1 in line with inflation and the Maliki family was now satisfied with the reason behind the price increase.

I would have thought that burying someone would be the ultimate in Carbon Sequestration and give rise to a Carbon Credit.

Why are people supprised? This is what they voted for right? Carbon taxes hit every business regardless of what they do. As a consequence these businesses pass along their new costs to the customers. If America is stupid enough to keep Obama in office, each and every business will be hit with a carbon tax and they will simply pass it along to their customers as well.

No offence Gary, but it's one thing to commentate on Australia's political system whilst living in australia and whilst experiencing everything that the government subjects us to. But it's an entirely different matter to commentate upon the the government of another country. Unless you're living in america right now, unless you're working in america and experience all the little hardships, you have no right to group "americans" as being stupid if they vote for Obama. There are a range of factors that lead to voting, and not every american would be as overly concerned as you are with one aspect of reform. They have healthcare to worry about, rising unemployment, post-recession cop-outs, budget, and also their situation in afghanistan. If you don't know anything about the situation of another country (and I mean lviing there,- for you see, most french political commentators look upon our political system, via reading our policies and make comments about how good the government is without actually living here) then you should keep your opinions to yourself. You commentating is as equal to say, some one from eurozone or greece commentating on our policies and calling YOU stupid for voting a particular way.

What goes around comes around. Only "educated" people now that. Trailer trash, whose vote is bought for a food stamp, (even Ivy League trash, will get just exactly what "I" pay for.

When I'm out of loot... they're out of loot.

..The "sad" thing is... THAT IS WHAT "THEY" HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH:: Render AMERICA 3rd world.

Now... Say it isn't so...

From an Ameican perspective it is comforting to see that an Australian gets it. Thanks for the comments common sense is welcomed no matter the source. Many in America are disappointed in what is going on in Oz. You are of course hurting yourselves when you buy into America's biggest BS artist Al Gore. I thought you guys had more sense. Obama is killing the US and if he continues in power we will all go down togethter

I hope you include yourself in the "most".......Maybe you can give us a percentage and narrow it down. I would bet money you are a liberal...You think you are smarter than everyone else and therefore know whats best for everyone and then you force your anti-hamburger, anti-soda, anti-transfat, anti-meat and anti-everything else junk science down our throats. Because you know whats better for me than I do. That is the height of arrogance and stupidity.

Obama voters are Not stupid. They know what they are voting for, all those freebies he promised them. The sob's are dang near close to outnumbering the Tax Payer, that would be me. If Obambi gets another 4 years we are frickin toast, because he will legalize 30 million illegal mexicans and then the game is over.

@Thorne.. Umm, no he has the right to his opinion & Gary has the right to his. that is what Americans fought for-Freedom of speech for all even the ill-informed. As far as Obama goes, there were other presidents that have been instrumental in idiot decisions that have effected America. Relying on the media to post your answers to a government issue, is your fault not the medias. Get educated on the situation before you blame the media for issues you have not done research on. Google is free and obviously you have a computer to search, so do it. We had voted for a president that supposibly looked for weapons of mass of destruction that weren't there and was squarely in the economic housing crash of the US. But you can blame Obama bcuz the MEDIA said it. Surely, you can go to the voting booth and fix that. But you can not fix ignorance.

Stating political commentary mayonly derive from the population of said nation is a slightly foolish notion. Based on the global history of communist reform, and the millions of people it has historically murdered, I feel it is valid to comment on the affairs of nations such as the former Soviet Union, and Maoist China. These are nations I am not from but am a vocal critic of. I don't mind if, as an American, a person from another nation criticizes the current direction of fabian socialist reform, and the recent emergence of a police state under dictator Obama. Healthcare in the United States was perfectly stable, although it has been plagued with Illegal Immigrants and non-taxpayer burdens. Obamacare, much like his other radical policies (such as those established by his "justice depatrment") are pushing very close to tyrannical. When it comes to France, you guys have elected a major mistake in your new president. Also, Greece austerity measures are the only solution to save the nation, and bailouts to their broken economy are only going to bankrupt the Euro Zone. A shared currency between multiple nations implies a shared economy. I see the current crisis as a natural decetralization of the regional governance. This is a paramount example of why groups like United Nations are incapable of any long-term governance without violating the national sovereignty of the local and state governments of it's members. The UN is a farce that is a sink for tax money, for more info on why this is so, you should catch the documentary called "U.N. Me", it is available online. But the long and short of my comment, we Amerians believe ALL PERSONS, have he right not only to criticize our national government, but to hold a distrust of all forms of government, because it is healthy to do so. The freedom of speech extends to all men as it is endowed us by our creator, not by our regional government. Please speak critically of my nation if it is warranted, but only if it is the truth. Keep up the good commentary.

Voting is not compulsory in the U.S. & many don't vote, however I'm sure all the 'Obama' people did (surely_vote even tho some couldn't write their name. If it was made compulsory I'm sure the outcome could have been very different.. I personally know for a fact that 4 of my American friends have never voted in their lives.

Americans did vote for Obama. Yes, that was stupid. But, then again, the media did do an outstanding job of actively NOT looking into his background, as the public relies upon them to do.

Australians did NOT vote for a carbon tax. The Prime Minister of Australia, before the election, stood on camera and LIED, pledging no carbon tax under her re-elected government. She lied about that, lied about knifing Rudd in the back and goodness knows what else.

Well, given that the prime minster Julia Gillard before the elections blatantly lied to us when she promised that there would be no carbon tax under her government, I think it is somewhat unfair to say we voted for this.

It is illegal in Australia for a business to blame price rises on the Carbon Tax, even if that is the reason for the price rises. So of course they officially have to state that it is not the case. It is the same with any law against freedom of speech and thought - one simply has to state publicly a belief in the mantra of the ruling power.

Southern metropolitan cemetries trust will be up for a fine for this statement that was made. Gillard has said that anybody blaming increased prices on carbon tax will be fined. There has been no inflation. Carbon Tax is the cause of inflation. It must be against the law to withhold this information. But the laws have already been corrupted by the corporations and Carbon Tax is the biggest confidence trick australians have fallen for albeit under duress and therefore by law it is null and void we will all be able to claim it back if we restore the law. Just wanted to point out to all these wonderful Amercians calling Australians stupid for "letting" the carbon tax be introduced and "believing in" global warming, we have as much control over the Government as you do. Honestly fix your own backyard before you come on here and question us!
